You may or may not be aware but I love creating bags inspired by plants. I also love Christmas. What better way to combine my two loves than to make this Christmas tree tote bag?

This pattern is for the intermediate-beginner. I will not be giving a tutorial of how to crochet. In order to complete this pattern you need to know a few of the basic crochet concepts. Let's get started on this adorable bag! 🎄
Materials
Size 4 worsted weight yarn. You can use any fiber or brand, I used approximately 200 yards of Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton in the color Rainforest for the tree and Big Twist acrylic for all the ornaments, the stump, and the strap. Please be mindful that if you use acrylic yarn for the bag and strap it will stretch.
4.5 millimeter crochet hook
Yarn needle
1 button + sewing needle and thread
Abbreviations
CH - Chain
SC - Single crochet
SC2TOG - Single crochet 2 together (aka decrease)
FO - fasten off
HDC - Half double crochet
SL ST - Slip stitch
Begin by making the tree
Make a slipknot then CH 55.
Turn and SC into the second stitch from the hook then SC for the rest of the row.
CH 1 and turn then SC2TOG in the first 2 stitches
SC for the rest of the row then SC2TOG in the last 2 stitches.
Repeat this for 5 more rows.
CH 4 at the beginning of the row
SC in the second stitch from the hook then SC for the rest of the row
CH 4 at the end of the row.
Turn and SC for most of the row then SC2TOG at the end then CH 1
Continue to SC2TOG at the beginning and end of each row for 5 more rows.
Repeat this process until you have 5 "points" on your panel (10 if you're counting both sides) about 33 or 34 rows total.
Once you've SC across the last CH 4 continue SC2TOG at the beginning and end of each row until there are only 4 stitches left.
CH 1 and turn, then SC in each of the 4 stitches.
Fasten off.
Repeat this entire process for the second panel.
Once you're finished making both panels sew them together from the tip of one of the top side points all the way around to the other. Make sure you leave the top of the bag open. I used a whip stitch but you can use any stitch you'd like.
Also you may notice that your panels don't match up, you will need to flip them around so that all the points match up otherwise you won't be able to sew them together properly.
Next we will move on to all the accessories for the tree!

To make the strap attach the yarn with a slip stitch to the front panel.
Place 1 HDC in the next 3 stitches then CH 1.
Repeat this until you reach your desired strap length.
Attach the strap to the opposite side of the bag on the back panel with slip stitches, then fasten off.

To make the stump CH 9 with brown yarn.
SC in the second stitch from the hook then SC for the entire row then CH 1.
Repeat this for 9 more rows then fasten off and leave a long tail.
Fold the piece in half and sew the 3 open sides closed.
Then sew the stump to the bottom of the tree.

For the ornaments you can use any colors you want!
SC 6 into a magic circle.
SL ST into the first stitch then fasten off and leave a long tail.
You can make as many or few ornaments as you'd like. I made 14 for mine.
If you'd like your ornaments to be larger just add more stitches in your magic circle.
Last but not least let's make the star!
Start with SC 6 into a magic circle
Place 2 SC in each stitch around
1 SC then CH 4, place 1 SL ST, 1 SC then 1 HDC in each stitch of the chain
Skip the next stitch then SL ST into the stitch after
Repeat 4 more times for a total of 5 points
Fasten off

Once you're finished with all your ornaments sew them to the tree. I only sewed them to one side but if you want to you can sew them to both.
Now let's make the closure!
First, sew a button on the top of the back side of the tree.
Using your yellow yarn attach with a SL ST on the back of the star CH 5 or as many stitches as you need. Attach with a SL ST to the other side of the star.

Weave in all your ends and you're done, now you have an adorable Christmas tree tote!
Thank you for using my pattern and if you'd like to share your bag on social media tag me @lovelyloopedcrochet I'd love to see it!
